Frequently asked questions

Curious about Ampersand? Read these practical answers before considering use. Individual responses can vary, so start cautiously and follow the advice of your prescribing clinician and the product label.

What is Ampersand?

Ampersand is a novel edible cannabis concentrate made with rosin. It is designed primarily for sublingual use: place a measured scoop under your tongue and hold it for about two minutes before swallowing. This route may produce a quicker, different-feeling onset than a regular edible such as a cake or gummy.

How is sublingual Ampersand different from a regular edible?

When a regular edible is swallowed, it is usually processed through the liver before its effects are felt, often 45 minutes to an hour later. With sublingual use, Ampersand is intended to absorb under the tongue, with effects potentially beginning in around 10 to 15 minutes. Everyone responds differently, so do not assume the timing or intensity will be the same for you.

How long will the effects last?

Duration depends on your dose, your individual response and whether the product is used under the tongue or swallowed. A low dose may feel shorter and lighter, while higher doses may have strong effects that last six hours or longer. Allow plenty of time and avoid taking more too soon.

How much is too much?

For first-time use, start with a very small, measured amount and wait at least one hour before deciding whether to take more. A dose around one-third of a teaspoon has been described as producing an energetic, bright and social effect for some people, but it may not be appropriate for everyone. Higher doses can be much stronger and are more likely to cause unwanted effects.

Can you overdose on Ampersand?

Taking more than intended can cause an unpleasantly strong cannabis experience. Higher doses may lead to confusion, reduced basic motor control, sleepiness, food cravings or excessive energy. If you feel unwell or are concerned about yourself or someone else, seek urgent medical advice. Keep Ampersand securely away from children and anyone it has not been prescribed for.

Can I drive after using Ampersand?

No. Do not drive, ride, or operate machinery or a motor vehicle while under the influence of Ampersand. Plan a safe way home and allow enough time for effects to fully wear off. Follow New Zealand law and any advice provided by your doctor or medical cannabis clinic.

Can Ampersand be smoked or dabbed?

No. Ampersand is intended as an edible, sublingual concentrate, not an inhaled product. Do not smoke or dab it. Use it only as directed on the approved product label and by your prescribing clinician.

Is Ampersand legal in New Zealand?

Ampersand products will only be legally available once they have been developed within New Zealand’s medical cannabis regulations. They must be prescribed by a doctor, GP or a specialist medical cannabis clinic, such as Calyx Clinic. Ampersand is not a recreational product.

Can I stir Ampersand into tea, coffee or another drink?

Some people may choose to stir Ampersand into a drink. However, swallowing it may change the onset and duration compared with holding it under the tongue, and may make dosing less predictable. Follow the approved directions and speak with your prescriber or pharmacist before using it this way.
